PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two people were struck by a car on a sidewalk late Saturday afternoon in West Philadelphia approximately one block away from the largest Juneteenth festival in the city. One of the victims was pinned under it, and emergency crews weren't the only ones to come to her rescue.

"What I saw was the car went up on the pavement, knocked the poll down and knocked the tables down," said Atiba Kwesi, who was there the entire time.

"And then the car decelerated and somehow accelerated again and went around the corner on the pavement," Kwesi added.

Police say the driver was an elderly woman who accidentally confused the break for gas, plowing right through a tent that was set up outside the restaurant at the intersection of 52nd and Spruce streets. She struck two people.

One of the victims was pinned under her car, and Kwesi and other witnesses came to her rescue.

"We lifted it up, moved it, but when we put it back down somebody said she was still under there, we realized she was still under the car. So the second time, when it was lifted up we pulled the girl out," Kwesi said.

When first responders got to the scene, they got both victims to the hospital, who are expected to be OK.

The elderly driver and she also had a passenger, and  neither of them were hurt.
