PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Malvern-based Acme Markets is closing its Main Line location on Youngsford Road in Gladwyne.

Acme acquired the Gladwyne location in a 2015 deal, purchasing the Superfresh there, along with dozens of stores from parent company A&P, when that storied chain declared bankruptcy.

Spokeswoman Dana Ward said it's always a difficult decision to close a store, but the Gladwyne market has been underperforming and will close by mid-February.

"The store hasn't met our goals for a number of years," she said. "The decision was made to reinvest money that may have been spent there to other locations."

"Like all retailers, we're constantly evaluating the store portfolio, and we have to look at every angle of the business," Ward said.

She says it's been a lower-volume operation compared with its existing Lower Merion Acme operations in Bryn Mawr, Wynnewood, Narberth and Bala Cynwyd.

"The store hasn't met our goals for a number of years. Therefore, we will deploy the team and resources elsewhere, to better serve our customers," she said.

She said the company is looking out for the people currently working at the Gladwyne Acme.

"Every associate that is interested in remaining with the company will have the opportunity to transfer to open positions at nearby stores," she said.

The chain, which operates 170 stores in six states, closed its King of Prussia, Lansdale and Dover stores in 2018.
