Beer delivery service allows Yards to hire back some furloughed employees

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — John Wagner was sitting around the house doing a whole lot of nothing when he got a call from Yards Brewing Co., offering him a new gig.

“I pounced at the opportunity to get back in the building,” he said.

Wagner is one of three furloughed workers who was brought back earlier this month to help the brewery get its new delivery operation up and running.

Yards CEO Trevor Pritchett said it has already taken off.

“We started with a pretty tight footprint — downtown Philadelphia — and we’ve expanded that footprint. Now we’re covering the majority of Philadelphia County, and we’re thinking of how we can expand that even further,” he said.

When nonessential businesses were forced due to the coronavirus pandemic, Yards initially had to furlough 115 employees. As the delivery option expands, Pritchett hopes they’ll be able to hire back even more workers.

Wagner is grateful to be back on the payroll — and to provide some liquid relief to customers. When he shows up at people’s doors — from a social distance, of course — the response has been well beyond appreciative.

“I’ve gotten Christmas morning quotes, I’ve gotten ‘we’re doing God’s work’ quotes,” Wagner laughed. “People aren’t upset to see us, that’s for sure.”
