PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Mexican Cultural Week is underway in Philadelphia through Sunday.

Alicia Kerber, Head Consul of Mexico in Philadelphia says there are a variety of events going on throughout Philadelphia celebrating Mexican culture this week, starting with a photography exhibit at the Consulate of Mexico.

"We have an exhibition at the consulate of Afro-Mexicans, the Zapoteca culture that lives specifically in Oaxaca," she said.

There's also a documentary showing, an orchestra performance, a celebration at City Hall and a specialty dinner.

"It's the cuisine that was developed by the Aztecs before the Spanish conquered Mexico," she explained.

Mexican Cultural Week ends on Cinco De Mayo just as Mexican Restaurant Week begins.

Kerber says the goal is to allow people to experience Mexico through all their senses.

"I think it is very joyful to have people from the United States and people from Mexico really sharing the values that help us to build bridges instead of building walls," Kerber added.
