Berks DA hopes to slow COVID-19 by cracking down on businesses ignoring mask order

READING, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Berks County’s district attorney is cracking down on businesses refusing to follow the state’s orders to wear masks and follow other safety protocols.

His warning comes as Berks has now passed neighboring Chester County in the number of reported COVID-19 cases and deaths.

Berks D.A. John Adams said his office has been fielding dozens of complaints about lax safety practices inside a number of businesses in the county in the days leading up to Monday’s state health department wear-a-mask order for businesses and customers.

Now Adams is using a strategy to get everyone on the same page.

“I will be mandating those police departments throughout our county to respond and demand voluntary compliance by the businesses and the people who live in this county,” Adams said.

He said police will visit those businesses and explain why it’s critical  they comply with state orders.

The D.A. said he’s not looking to punish people or businesses. Rather, he said, his intent is to stop the alarming spread of the coronavirus in Berks.
