FOLCROFT, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Police say a 13-year-old boy who couldn't swim drowned in the deep end of the Folcroft Swim Club pool in Delaware County late Tuesday night after he and three other teenage friends broke in.
Folcroft Police Chief William Bair says cops got a 911 call just before 1 a.m. from one of the boys, and emergency responders who joined them had to break through a locked gate to get access.
"They finally got in, and when they looked around they found a person in the deep end," Bair said.
Bair says authorities recovered the boy's body and turned it over to the Delaware County medical examiner's office.
The chief says the teens — ranging in ages from 13 to 15 years old — were all from nearby Darby Township.
During separate interviews with police, they reported their friend jumped off the high diving board, went right to the bottom of the pool and never came up.
Bair says because none could swim, they didn't attempt to save him and ran off.
The chief says the boys slipped out of their homes late Tuesday night and decided to go pool hopping.
Bair called the drowning a "tragic accident" and said he's turning the investigation over to the Delaware County District Attorney's Office.
