MARGATE, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Before we know it, Memorial Day will be here. And while you may not be thinking of summer right now during the coronavirus pandemic, it's front and center for businesses down the Shore.
The thought of missing part (or all) of summer is a scary one for any restaurant or store down the shore, but what people may not realize is now is the time businesses by the beach normally start seeing am uptick.
"After Passover and Easter, if the weather is nice on the weekends, people start coming down, getting their houses ready," explained Dellafave. "They're getting excited to come back down the Shore."
But that's not happening at the moment as people with second homes down the Shore are being asked to stay away, and year-round residents are being asked to stay inside.
Dellafave said even if things are back to normal again in a month or so, not being able to cash in on this pre-summer surge hurts.
"It's not like you're going to gain it back," he said. "Every day you miss out on you miss out on."
Freedman told KYW Newsradio business at Bocca is down about 50% from what they'd usually be making this time of year.
She said not having casinos and the Atlantic City Convention Center open adds insult to injury, because both typically bring in a lot more people in the offseason.
