CHERRY HILL, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A group of Cherry Hill Little League players, born years after 9/11, paid tribute to the first responders on that day 19 years ago.

The idea began when 12-year-old Matty Williams got inspired by the seeing first responders spring into action during the pandemic.

"We've been thinking a lot about first responders since we've seen all they've done to keep us safe during COVID," he said.

So Williams and his Cherry Hill Athletic Little League teammates suited up for their last game at Cherry Hill National Athletic Field, and with the help of their coach and parents, they organized the ball game Friday night, calling it "the last dance."

Then came the first pitch by Cherry Hill Mayor Susan Shin Angulo, which Matty's mother Michelle said showed the solid community cohesion of Cherry Hill Township.

"Look at baseball," she said. "It's always been a really simple, a pastime that always brings people together, and we saw this as an opportunity to bring the players and the community together to honor what happened (on) 9/11. "

For Williams, his advice to everyone attending this social distancing ball game was short and simple.

"Life is short," he said, "so always choose kindness."
