Closed for COVID-19, PennDOT using photos on file to renew driver's licenses

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The coronavirus pandemic has prompted PennDOT to make changes in the way it is renewing Pennsylvania driver’s licenses.

The PennDOT Driver License Centers in southeastern Pennsylvania are currently closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

That means residents can’t get a photo taken for a new license or state ID, but PennDOT has come up with a solution: old photos.

“All customers who renew the driver’s license or photo ID cards online or through the mail will receive a new product using the most recent photo that we have of that individual in our PennDOT system,” said Diego Sandino, a PennDOT community relations coordinator. “No camera cards will be issued to these customers, and they will receive their new product by mail within 15 days.”

The renewed license is still good for four years.

Sandino said the deadline to get a Real ID, which will be required for entry to federal buildings and flying on planes, has been pushed back to October 2021.

When PennDOT Driver Centers reopen for business, customers can get a REAL ID at no extra charge, he said.
