HARRISBURG, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States is more than six years off, but it's not too soon to start planning the party. And that's just what Pennsylvania has officially begun to do.
A saxophone performance by former Miss Pennsylvania Katie Schreckengast topped off a ceremony at the governor's residence during which members of the America250 Pennsylvania Commission were officially sworn in by Gov. Wolf.
"(The) first goal is to have one hell of a party. To make sure that we celebrate our 250th birthday in an appropriate fashion," Wolf said.
An honorary member of the committee is former Gov. Tom Corbett, who has kept a low profile since leaving office.
"The governor asked all the former governors — living former governors — to become honorary members of the commission. And I was pleased to do it," Corbett said.
The executive director says the Pennsylvania commission will work hand in hand with organizers of the national celebration activities, many of which will take place in Philadelphia. But the state commission will also create educational and historical preservation opportunities in all 67 counties ahead of 2026.
