BLACKWOOD, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A summer day camp in Camden County for people with special needs is keeping its participants quite busy this summer with a virtual experience.

Camp Sunny Side has been offering instruction in art, fitness and music, computer lessons, and much more for about 30 years. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the camp was forced to cancel its summertime in-person gatherings this year, so they moved the experience online, says Camden County Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez.

Those camp children grow into adults who also benefit from Sunny Side's programs. Laura Randazzo, 42, has been part of the camp experience since she was 10 years old.

Her father, Jim, said she "has made more progress" since she started interacting virtually with others.

"She's learned how to function on the computer. She's learned that she has to communicate on the computer. She has to be engaged," he said.

He said Randazzo's body language has changed, and she looks forward to camp every day. He said he's impressed with the support from the county and instructors to keep the program alive.

Although Camp Sunny Side 2020 ends on July 31, both Randazzo and Rodriguez say they hope to see some of these online activities included in future camps.
