PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)  Darius Slay put together seven impressive seasons in Detroit, and now, he is settling in with his new team in South Philadelphia.

Slay was acquired by the Eagles in an off-season trade and is expected to provide a huge boost to the secondary. While Slay was happy in Detroit, the Lions were never serious Super Bowl contenders during his time in the Motor City.

Now, Slay is with a franchise that picked up the Super Bowl trophy nearly three years ago.

The veteran defensive back has been impressed with the culture in the Eagles locker room and feels as if players have a chance to "be themselves" without any restrictions.

"A lot of guys have got different characteristics," Slay said. "For example, I'm a goofy guy that might not seem to look at everything serious, but I'm pretty serious. I just like to have a smile on my face. To come here and have freedom to be around the guys and be around the sport that you love to do, you've got to enjoy it."

Slay is being counted on to play the role of shutdown cornerback. He not only has the skills to succeed, but also the confidence needed to play one of the toughest positions in football.

"I’ve got a lot of swag," said Slay. "I was always taught to come out there with swag. Definitely DBs, we’ve got the hardest position out there on the field. You’ve got to have it, man, you’ve got to have a swagger about you."

The season is now less than three weeks away, and game one for the Eagles will be in Washington on Sept. 13.

Slay has no issues with being ready on and off the field as he continues to fit in quite nicely with his new teammates.

"I'm going to bring that swag," Slay said. "I am going to bring that laugh and that giggling and that excitement and play making ability. I'm going to bring all of that to the table. That's the goal."
