From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lot K, parents can drive through and get free school backpacks loaded with supplies.
“Families of pre-K through 12th-grade students will be able to safely drive through the parking lot and receive one backpack with school supplies for each child in their car,” said Superintendent William Hite.
No children in the car? No worries. Adults can collect up to two backpacks for kids.
No appointment or reservation is necessary for Friday’s giveaway. The district has other walk-up backpack giveaways scheduled for Monday, but reservations are required. Hite said all the slots they are already taken.
In addition to the district’s backpack giveaway, individual principals are making sure students at their schools have the materials they need. At Mitchell Elementary School in Kingsessing, for example, Principal Stephanie Andrewlevich said her school is preparing students for the online start of classes next week.
“We’re giving out notebooks. We’re giving out headphones. We’re giving out trifold boards so they can set up private areas at home,” she explained.
