Financial literacy expert says to have a clear plan when you get stimulus check

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)  Many are having issues or still waiting for their stimulus payments, while others got their money already. So, what do you do when the cash comes in?

Chelsea Barrish, vice president of Philadelphia-based nonprofit Clarifi, says plenty of calls have come in from those concerned about their finances.

“Getting a lot of questions from people that we don’t normally talk to because they’re normally in a situation where they can make their expenses,” Barrish said.

Every cent counts for those not working, Barrish says, and the focus should be using stimulus dollars on food, shelter and medicine.

“You want to focus on what is life sustaining for your family,” Barrish added.

As hard as it may be, she says it isn’t the time to worry about your credit score. And it’s critical to make sure you’re getting every benefit you’re eligible for.

And for those fortunate to still be working, Barrish says save as much of the stimulus money as you can because skies may be clear now, but that rainy day may be around the corner.

“The landscape is changing everyday. So, just because your income is safe right now, your job is safe right now, that doesn’t mean that’ll be the case three months from now,” she added.
