PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Socially distanced trash cleanup is taking place this summer in Philadelphia. The “Love Your Park Solo” program, launched by the Fairmount Park Conservancy in response to the pandemic, is a popular outdoor activity this year.

The year's large cleanup efforts had to be cancelled, but individuals or small groups are pitching in to help keep parks clean on their own time.

Park users can get a free cleanup kit mailed to them and take it to any park. It includes instructions, a couple of trash bags, gloves and a face mask.

“You can do it on your own pace, whenever you want,” said Lindsey Walker, the conservancy's volunteer and environmental program manager.

“We have this really great volunteer portal, and when you register, it will invite you to come back to that portal, and then put in how many bags of trash you collected, how many hours you spent volunteering, and even offer a space to provide a little reflection or feedback on your experience,” Walker explained.

The program is a partnership with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation.
