Jerome Pastore, 57, leaves behind a wife and five children. Hundreds of residents joined Pastore's family for a vigil on Davis Avenue, outside of the Shamrock Deli in Audubon.
"There's no words for this, you know," said his wife, Ethel.
Pastore's family led the community in prayer as they remembered the man they say was the best man they knew.
"To us, our dad was unstoppable. He was everything to us," she said, addressing the friends and family gathered. "He would be blown away to see that all of you came out here."
Mike, who said he is a longtime customer of Shamrock, came to pay his respects to Pastore and his family.
"He was a good man and a good family man," he said. "He would give you the shirt off his back. It's a tragedy."
Meg, a neighbor, said, "It's one of those things. You can never imagine the thought of it. It breaks my heart." Seeing all of the people together, Pastore's children sounded hopeful.
"We live in a really crazy time right now, our skin color and politics. I think we should be proud that our community can come together," said a daughter.
"I think we're all surrounded by divisiveness like we've never seen," said a son. "And all of us here is what's going to combat that."
The family said the Shamrock Deli will be open this week. An 18-year-old suspect has been arrested in the case. Dyheam Williams of Lindenwold is charged with murder and numerous weapon offenses.
