TURNERSVILLE, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — An employee of a South Jersey Dunkin' has contracted hepatitis A, and the Gloucester County Department of Health is warning customers.
According to the department, a food worker at the Dunkin' at 460 Hurffville-Cross Keys Road in Turnersville contracted the virus. The coffee shop is located in the shopping center on Cross Keys Road and Altair Drive, near the Jefferson Health Washington Township health complex.
"The dates that we are concerned about that people may have visited there would be May 18 through June 1," said Ditty Mae Jankauskas, director of public health nursing for the county's health department. "While the risk to the people who ate or drank anything there is very low, out of an abundance of caution, we recommend that they receive post-exposure prophylaxis," or PEP.
PEP consists of a hepatitis A vaccine or an immune globulin, which would reduce the risk of contracting the virus.
The hepatitis A vaccine should be received as soon as possible, but no later than June 15.
The health department said the shot is a preventive measure, and the customer should not be displaying any signs or symptoms. If you are showing symptoms — like fever, abdominal pain, lost of appetite, vomiting, dark urine or jaundice — contact your physician immediately.
