Former Bordentown police chief Frank Nucera found guilty of lying to FBI

CAMDEN, N. J. (KYW Newsradio) — A federal jury in Camden has found the former top cop in Bordentown guilty on one of three counts stemming from the 2016 arrest of a handcuffed black teenager. The panel returns in Thursday morning to decide what to do about the other two counts in the case.

Frank Nucera was convicted on lying to the FBI about the case, a charge that could carry a jail term of up to five years when sentencing takes place Feb. 6.

"We were optimistic that the jury would find a reasonable doubt on all of the counts," said defense attorney Rocco Cipparone. "He’s handling it with as much dignity and grace as anybody could under the circumstances. But I can’t say it’s not disappointing. It is disappointing"

But the alleged hate crime assault and a civil rights violation are still officially undecided.

The jury has twice told Judge Robert Kugler they were deadlocked but wanted time to decide if further deliberations might change that. Kugler could declare a mistrial on those two counts.

The U.S. attorney’s office offered no comment on the partial verdict.
