PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — During National Radon Action Month, officials are encouraging homeowners to test for the cancer-causing gas — for free.

Radon is a naturally occurring gas and the second leading cause of lung cancer. It can be found at high volumes in every two out of five homes in Pennsylvania.

Kevin Stewart, director of environmental health with the American Lung Association, said his organization is offering free test kits this month, and you should get one.

“Radon is invisible, colorless, odorless. There's no way to detect it with your senses. It doesn't cause any immediate health symptoms either. Lung cancer takes a long time to appear, so we want people to get a hold of the danger first before the risk has built up,” he explained.

Radon comes from uranium found in rocks and soil. Stewart said the work to prevent the gas from entering your home can cost between $500 and $1,500.
