NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Attention New Jersey drivers: You'll soon be sharing the road with e-bikers.

Low-speed electric bikes and scooters are now legal in the Garden State under a bill signed Monday by Gov. Phil Murphy.

The bikes have a maximum speed of 19 miles per hour.

The bikes are allowed on streets, highways and sidewalks without registration, a driver's license or proof of insurance.

Today, @GovMurphy signed legislation promoting the use of motorized scooters and low-speed e-bikes as an alternative to cars, boosting New Jersey’s innovation economy and encouraging a true re-imagining of urban commuting.https://t.co/LcbZHUtixj pic.twitter.com/2diGyTVHVo

Scooter rental companies Bird and Lyft hailed the measure.

Supporters of the measure say e-bikes help alleviate congestion on roads and are environmentally responsible.
