PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)  The School District of Philadelphia said it should have a full complement of teachers on hand to begin the virtual school year next week.

Days before the new virtual school year begins, nearly all job vacancies in the school district have been filled, said Superintendent William Hite.

“We’re at 99.9% staffed,” he said.

Hite said 600 new teachers have been hired for the new school year. The wild card remains the physical return to classrooms.

“The unknown is when we finally come back to in person, what will that entail and what will that require in terms of staffing. But right now, we’re in the best staffing shape we’ve ever been in since I’ve been here,” Hite said.

Hite said for now, COVID-19 and the resulting pivot to virtual learning have not created a wave of teacher turnover.
