PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The La Salle University baseball team has made big strides in 2019.

At 15-14, the Explorers have already eclipsed their win total for the entire 2018 season when they went 14-41.

Their 15th win came on Tuesday, and it was quite the offensive performance as they hammered Lehigh up in Bethlehem 14-6 as part of the Liberty Bell Classic. The Explorers finished with 22 hits in the win, five of them off the bat of second baseman Peyton Sorrels. But you know it's a great offensive day when a five-hit day gets overshadowed.

The headline performance out of this game came from La Salle freshman catcher Tatem Levins, who hit three home runs in the victory.

"I was feeling good," Levin said. "After the Saint Bonaventure series (over the weekend) we were a little down (lost two of three), and I knew I had to work on some things with my swing. I just came into (Tuesday)'s approach with a simple swing, trying to stay short and things ended up working out."

That's an understatement. Levins, a 6 feet, 2 inches left-handed hitter, hit his first dinger in the fourth inning, a solo shot. Then he blasted a two-run shot in the fifth and wrapped up his day with another two-run blast in the eighth.

So what was it like circling the bases for that third time?

"A little bit surreal," he said. "It was very weird, I've only had one other game where I had that many home runs, but that came in JV baseball, so nothing (like that) on this level."

The three home runs are tied for the most in a game by a player in Division I baseball this season. It was the first three homer game for an Explorer since Ethan Springston in 2015.

After his big day, Levins, a Langhorne, Pennsylvania native, now leads the Explorers with five home runs, and his five runs batted in moved him into second on the team with 22.

He talks about how his adjustment has gone to the college game.

"It's been very good," he said. "A learning curve, especially looking after some of the seniors and how they're playing the game. Just learning everything that I can about this game. It's very different from high school and travel baseball. The pitchers attack you much differently and go against your weaknesses and try to get you to make their outs and swing at pitches that they want you to swing at."

Levins and the Explorers return to action on Friday afternoon with a home game against Virginia Commonwealth University.
