PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — As the coronavirus pandemic rages on, a small but mighty nonprofit has jumped into action to tend to the immediate needs of struggling veterans and families in Philadelphia.

"During this time of a pandemic, our foundation is helping the community by being an emergency response unit," explained Sappho Fulton, co-founder of the Sappho and LaRoyce Foundation.

The organization aims to support LGBTQ people of color through "holistic healing," but when the coronavirus hit, the foundation stepped up to help the community through its COVID-19 Response Unit.

"We have been feeding folks from disabled vets to families that have limited resources and waiting for unemployment," said Fulton, noting the virus does not discriminate.

The organization has been assisting families who have lost jobs but don't qualify for unemployment, as well as older adults.

"We are feeding elders that don't have access to food," she added, "elders that don't have access to hand sanitizer, different supplies."

The nonprofit depends solely on donations to operate, and without the community's help, Fulton said the work just couldn't get done.
