The manhunt lasted for hours, and police eventually got a suspect in custody: 34-year-old Brian Kennedy of Devon.
Inside the Wawa on Sugartown Road, police say Kennedy blasted several shots from an AR-15-style rifle and killed his 37-year-old ex-wife, Stephanie Miller, around 8 p.m. As of Friday, he has been charged with criminal homicide, first- and third-degree murder, and other related offenses.
"With an ArmaLite 15, he brutally murdered the mother of his child in a public place in cold blood, placing numerous others at risk, then cowardly fled the area," Delaware County District Attorney Kat Copeland said Friday.
Detectives concluded Kennedy arrived at the Wawa to meet Miller, as they shared custody of a child. He then pulled a rifle from the trunk of his car, entered the store and shot his ex-wife.
According to authorities, Miller was found on the floor of the store with gunshot wounds to her head and stomach. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the deadly shooting happened while several other people were inside the store, and Kennedy drove off in a black BMW.
After a few hours, Pennsylvania State Police and other local agencies found and arrested him in Thornbury Park in Delaware County, about a half-hour away from where the shooting happened.
She said Miller did have a protection-from-abuse order, but it expired in September 2018.
The Wawa on Sugartown Road was still closed Friday morning, surrounded by police tape. Some employees were in the store, but it was unclear what was happening inside.
