More South Jersey beaches prepare to open with some restrictions

SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Beaches down the shore are reopening well in advance of Memorial Day weekend.

Sea Isle City beaches will be open Saturday with social distancing rules in place, said Mayor Len Desiderio. He’ll join Gov. Phil Murphy Thursday afternoon at his daily briefing to further discuss shore plans.

Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron actually opened his beaches last weekend to sunbathers, along with North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello.

“You can do everything on the beach at this point, but you still need to practice social distancing,” Byron explained. “Now by everything I mean you can swim, you can run, you can jog, you can lay on a blanket, you can sit in a chair and read your favorite book.”

With homeowners starting to return to the shore, Byron said they had to act now.

“We knew the people were gonna be coming. We would rather have the folks on our huge beaches and on the boardwalks than on the streets where it became a safety hazard with families and kids riding their bikes on the streets,” he added.

Many other shore towns have recently reopened beaches to limited activity, but not for people to sit on the beach and get a tan.

New Jersey has left the decision up to municipalities. However, boardwalk businesses are still closed, barring restaurants that fulfill takeout orders.

Murphy has promised to provide guidance to shore towns on how to safely operate before Memorial Day weekend.
