PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It's springtime, so not only are our temperatures going up, but so are gasoline prices.
The average price of a gallon of regular gas in the five-county area has topped $3 for the first time in six months, according to AAA. The average is $3.04 in Philadelphia. It's $2.84 in Camden County and $2.81 in New Castle County, Delaware.
It's evident at Front Street and Oregon Avenue in South Philadelphia. There's a Sunoco and a Liberty Gas, each selling regular for $3.09.
Asked if he keeps an eye on gas prices, one driver who has taken note of the jump said, "Yeah, I always do. ... I noticed in the northeast they're much cheaper than South Philly."
He added, "It's the summertime. Now is when they raise them and they make their money."
There are two reasons for price jump: the seasonal switch to more expensive summer blends of gas, and higher demand as people get out and drive more in the warmer weather.
