PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Monday was the first day back at class after a mumps warning at an Upper Darby school made the rounds. Now, both parents and school district officials are speaking out.

KYW Newsradio spoke with a woman who has multiple children attending Garrettford Elementary School, where a student has been diagnosed with the mumps. School officials sent an email to parents over the weekend.

"It just says that a case was identified at our school. It doesn't even say who it was or what grade or anything," she said.

She called the email vague, which has her feeling "shocked and concerned, because at this time of year with flu season and cold season, the symptoms that they provide in the email could be anything."

Symptoms listed are swollen glands, headache, low-grade fever, and earache.

Officials with Upper Darby School District say that everything in the email came from the health department and they followed the department's guidelines to a T.

They don't name the student to protect the child, and encourage anyone with questions to either call the school or more importantly, their child's doctor.

The email says students may have been exposed as early as Jan. 28th.
