Gov. Phil Murphy was asked about the report at an unrelated event in North Brunswick a day after the joint legislative panel made it clear that the governor’s people mishandled Katie Brennan’s complaints against Albert Alvarez at just about every turn.
Maybe so, but he isn’t changing his bottom line.
“I believe that the team in my office did what they believe was the right thing,” Murphy said, “and I stand behind them and that has been the case and that will continue to be the case.”
He reiterated his earlier belief that he wished he had learned of Brennan’s concerns before they came out in the papers.
The administration conducted its own probe and made changes in protocols in the office. Murphy’s staff is reviewing the panel’s 119 page report.
“If there are recommendations that we think will strengthen the processes that we have already taken, believe me we’re open minded to that,” the governor added, “because we have no less an objective than to being best of the American class.”
Among those recommendations, a call for greater accountability from such senior staffers when mistakes are made.
