New Jersey to send National Guard to assist with coronavirus efforts in long-term care facilities

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — New Jersey reported 1,503 new cases of coronavirus Sunday, for a total of 138,532. 140 additional deaths were confirmed, raising the state's death toll to 9,255.

South Jersey accounts for 13,353 cases, up 376 from Saturday. 38 new deaths were reported in the region as well, for a total of 644 fatalities to date.

More than half the statewide deaths are in long-term care facilities like nursing homes. At his Saturday briefing, Gov. Phil Murphy said they're addressing that part of the crisis.

"We have put in place significant new levels of oversight and resources, and the New Jersey National Guard is deploying some of its members this weekend to several of these facilities to assist in mitigation," said Murphy.

Experts are also being brought in to examine how things got this bad, and how to deal with those facilities in the future.

As for New Jersey schools, which have had to scramble to address the pandemic, they'll be able to get some help to pay the bill starting Monday.

"The state Department of Education will launch an online application process for eligible districts to receive their shares of $280 million to cover the costs of purchasing educational technology, providing remote instruction, cleaning and sanitizing buildings, and ensuring support services for students who require them, among other COVID-19 response-related expenses," the governor announced.
