NJ businessman ordered to pay federal cleanup bill for hazardous waste

CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A former South Jersey business owner has been ordered to pay a multimillion-dollar cleanup bill after admitting to storing hazardous waste on site.

Thomas Toy, 75, of Elmer owned Superior Barrel and Drum Company, based in Glassboro. The firm cleaned and processed industrial-sized metal drums before reselling them.

He was supposed to safely dispose of hazardous materials, but instead kept them on site, despite lacking a permit to do that. The feds came in to clean the place up seven years ago, removing 1,800 waste containers at a cost of $4.2 million.

Federal Judge Renee Bumb ordered Toy to make reimbursement and serve three years of supervised release, after 30 days of home confinement.
