Officials ask residents to stay out of Big Timber Creek in South Jersey because of sewage spill

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Authorities are asking residents to stay away from Big Timber Creek for now in South Jersey.

There was a malfunction Wednesday morning at a pump station on Chews Landing Road in Gloucester Township.

"Based on that malfunction, there was a spill within the pump station itself. It was sewage being pumped to the main processing plant," explained Camden County spokesman Dan Keashen.

He says the sewage spilled into Big Timber Creek for a few hours.

"At this particular time, we'd like people to stay away from the creek, to not recreate in the creek right now. Do not fish, do not swim," he said.

He's positive this won't have any long-term effects to the creeks water quality.

And Keashen says the spill won't affect the water in your homes either.

"The drinking water in the area will not be affected by this spill," he added.

Keashen hopes everything will be back to normal by the weekend.
