PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Drivers who speed through road construction zones, be warned: PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission are deploying technology to catch lawbreakers in the act.
During a pre-enforcement period, which runs through March 4, the devices will simply display drivers' speed on a sign as they approach.
However, after that initial 60-day period, the devices will photograph the license plate, capture the vehicle speed, and identify to whom the vehicle is registered.
Similar to red-light camera technology, after the information is captured, a violation notice is prepared and mailed to the vehicle owner.
State officials say the goal is not to issue violations, but to get people to slow down and ultimately improve safety for both highway construction workers and drivers.
