Pennsylvania Senate panel votes to subpoena Wolf for business closure information

HARRISBURG, Pa. (KYW Newsradio)  A Pennsylvania Senate committee, voting along party lines, has agreed to authorize subpoenas for information on the Wolf administration’s decisions to close some businesses and grant waivers to others. A spokeswoman said the governor will review the decision and determine the next steps.

Acting after the Wolf administration did not comply with requests for documents about the waiver process, the state Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee has voted to subpoena Gov. Wolf and his secretary of Community and Economic Development.

The vote came shortly after the state auditor general announced his own investigation.

The Republican chairman of the committee said he also supports the auditor general’s probe, but argued that a legislative investigation would likely have a different focus.

“We shouldn’t have to be at this point at all if, indeed, this administration was performing in the transparent fashion as they suggest they do,” said Bob Mensch, a suburban Philadelphia Republican.

Suburban Philadelphia Democrat Maria Collette said that the committee should instead address other pandemic issues, including the toll the virus is taking at the Southeastern Veterans Center in Chester County.

“I’m very disappointed in both parties that this conversation has become so heavily politicized,” Collette said.

Collette also said she instead supports the probe announced by the state auditor general.
