PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)  PECO is expanding assistance to customers facing financial hardships during the coronavirus pandemic. The program can now help customers dealing with the summer heat.

Chances are you're using your utilities more during the pandemic than you did previously, and with the weather heating up, that air conditioning and fan are probably going to get a lot more use.

“Folks are staying in their homes more and more and a lot of people that's resulting in them using more power,” said PECO’s Funmi Williamson.

Williamson says in addition to not cutting off services during the pandemic, they're also waiving late fees and deposits, and now, they’re giving grants to people in need.

“We want to make sure we are doing what we can to make our customers feel comfortable and safe in their own homes,” she added.

She says they're also letting people spread payments over future months.

“We're asking customers to reach out so we can work with them, given their unique circumstances,” Williamson said.

Tom Malecki with the nonprofit UESF says for qualified Philadelphians, they're paying up to $750 of their bill, and PECO is matching it, which is a move he says will help a lot of people throughout the dog days of summer.

“We're anticipating the middle of July for our volume to increase a lot more,” he added.
