HARRISBURG, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The Pennsylvania Game Commission has given preliminary approval to a plan to move the start of deer rifle-hunting season to the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Whoa, wait a minute.

The start of deer firearms-hunting season has been the Monday after Thanksgiving for decades. It’s a de facto holiday in Pennsylvania.

Actually, in many places, it’s not a holiday anymore, and Robb Miller, Gov. Wolf’s advisor on hunting and fishing, says that’s one reason the game commission has proposed moving the first day of the season up to the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

“We’re looking to really engage that next generation of hunters. We’re concerned that there aren’t enough hunters replacing those who are retiring now out of the sport. And more and more school districts aren’t allowing kids to hunt on the first day, you know, taking that Monday off,” Miller said.

Miller urges hunters to make their feelings about the proposed change known to the game commission, which will make a final decision on matter in early April.
