Philadelphia Community Corps collects salvages construction materials and sells them at low prices, and Greg Trainor, executive director of the nonprofit, says the goal is to keep that stuff out of landfills.
"Essentially, we get brought on to projects, and developers get big tax deductions for donating the building materials to us," Trainor said.
They also provide job training to people who really need it.
"We get them on to those work sites so they're working alongside contractors, and if they do a good job, we have a very high success rate of getting them hired. Most of our trainees are returning from incarceration," he added.
The "Small Business, Big Impact!" contest by AWeber runs through Feb. 8, and Trainor hopes enough people hear this and want to support a local organization.
"The most important thing about this is they can vote everyday. It's really quick, real easy. You don't even have to register on the website," he explained.
Trainor would like to expand on current programs and add furniture-making classes with the money.
