Tuesday marked the start of the Lunar New Year, and from making paper lanterns to coloring blossom trees and having story time, kids and adults at the South Philadelphia Library spent their Tuesday afternoon celebrating the day.
Connor Park with the Free Library says the event lets people of different cultures learn and interact with each other.
"It's been a good opportunity to reach out and meet more of our neighbors that we maybe wouldn't see every day," Park said.
Rose was at the event and says she hopes the experience makes a lasting impact with those who attended.
"It does foster not only personal growth, whether they happen to be of Chinese heritage or not, but also it helps all people to have a better grasp of what it means to be a part of the human community," Rose said.
Rose adds events like this are imperative for the next generation of Philadelphians.
"We'll be better rounded, more tolerant human beings," she said.
2019 is the year of the pig, which is believed to be a symbol of optimism, enthusiasm and hard work.
