PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Friday, Jan. 31 is the last day to apply to be considered for appointment to the School Board of Philadelphia. At least one change to the board in its next term is already known.

The board's vice president, Wayne Walker, has told Mayor Jim Kenney he does not want to be reappointed. Walker, in an interview, said a family matter will require him to travel too much to stay on the school board.

"I will be out of town significantly. When I look at all of the responsibilities I have to — I just felt that this would be the right thing to do," Walker said.

An attorney and business consultant, Walker was appointed to the nine-member volunteer panel in 2018 as Philadelphia took back its schools from state control. He says he feels like he made a contribution as the board established itself, and he'll miss the panel's focus on improving student performance.

The other eight members, including chair Joyce Wilkerson, are asking to be reappointed. Walker says he'll stay on until a replacement is named.
