PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Four men were arrested after a carjacking and police chase in Kensington late Monday night. Police were able to track the stolen pickup truck thanks to a cellphone left inside.
Police say a 35-year-old man was waiting for his wife in his running Chevy Silverado, on Elmwood Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia around 11 p.m., when a man approached him.
"That's when the male opened the door, the driver door, put a gun to the victim's head and told him to get out of the vehicle," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
Small says by the time the victim met with police he remembered that his daugther's cellphone was still in the truck, and police used the phone's GPS to track the truck.
"Our aviation unit began to track the vehicle, and then police officers from the 24th district saw the vehicle in the 400 block of East Tioga where it just got into an auto accident with a parked vehicle," Small said.
Officers eventually caught up with the stolen truck right after it had crashed on East Tioga Street. Four men inside got out and ran, but Small says officers were able to catch all four, even though they ran in different directions.
Small says a loaded handgun was found inside the stolen truck's center console, and one of the men arrested was identified by the victim as the person who stole his truck.
Jahmear Hopper, 25, was arrested and charged with simple assault, criminal conspiracy, robbery, carjacking, and related offenses. The other three men are not facing charges at this time.
