POTTSTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A Pottstown man is charged with first-degree murder after a man he stabbed earlier this month died from his injuries.
Sean Emmell, 24, is charged with the murder of 20-year-old Joshua Shupard.
According to court documents, Shupard was asked by his girlfriend to keep an eye on her while she met with Emmell, an ex-boyfriend who she had said raped her in the past.
Court documents say she was meeting with Emmell because he was threatening to interfere with her recent recruitment into the military.
On Jan. 3, she met with Emmell in her car in front of Pottstown Middle School and had a folding knife for protection.
According to the complaint, when she told Emmell she had to go, he pushed a thumbtack against her throat and threatened her and told her to recline her seat.
She pulled the knife, but Emmell took it from her. She honked the horn to signal Shupard, but when he pulled up and asked if everything was okay, Emmell got out and stabbed him in the chest.
Shupard died from the injuries on Monday and charges against Emmell were upgraded to murder. He is also facing charges of rape, sexual assault, and unlawful restraint.
