76ers agree to blockbuster trade with Clippers

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia 76ers aren’t interested in falling short of their goal of reaching the NBA Finals. They continue to make moves that show they’re going for it now rather than down the line.Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center, while losing big to conference rival Toronto, fans were shouting to general manager Elton Brand to make a move to improve the Sixers. In all likelihood, that wasn’t the straw that broke the camel's back, but it was a fitting prelude to the crescendo that broke overnight by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and confirmed by KYW Newsradio’s Jon Johnson.

— Jon Johnson (@jonjohnsonwip) February 6, 2019 The Sixers are getting 26-year-old talent Tobias Harris, along with center Boban Marjanovic and forward Mike Scott from the Los Angeles Clippers for rookie guard Landry Shamet, injured forward Wilson Chandler, stretch center Mike Muscala and four draft picks, including a 2020 lottery protected first round pick and a 2021 unprotected first round selection.Adding Harris to a starting lineup that already includes Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Jimmy Butler and JJ Redick makes them even more of a formidable contender in the Eastern Conference this season. Tobias averages 20.7 points per game, and scored 34 points to help the Clippers beat the Hornets only hours before the trade broke.

There are risks that come with this trade. First, Harris is due a big pay day, just like Butler will probably seek. Simmons is still early in his rookie deal, but it won’t be too long before he’ll see a pay increase as well. The Sixers don’t appear to be a team hesitant to spend, but that means this group needs to develop chemistry and prove they’re worth keeping together.Another risk is the Sixers are likely losing two future first round picks in this process, as well as Shamet, who’s a talented rookie out of Wichita State. His contributions to the Sixers so far this season can’t be overstated.Lastly, depth remains a problem for the 76ers. The trade deadline is Thursday at 3 p.m. EST, and the buyout market closes March 1. The Sixers will certainly need to add other players so their formidable starting five can get a breather every now and then.
