As part of a special event with a focus on military appreciation, the floating museum will host a five-on-five soccer tournament on its deck beginning Aug. 6.
The Battle of the Branches tournament is a partnership between the Philadelphia Union, Liberty USO, and Battleship New Jersey.
"I don't think it's been done before, in any other sport that I know of," said Union spokesperson Alyssa Gentile. "It's kind of a unique situation, an awesome asset that we have here."
Gentile said they couldn't think of a better place to host active duty, retired, reserve, and Department of Defense civilians for Military Appreciation Week.
"It's a retired boat; it's a museum. It's run by a lot of veterans, so we thought it was a pretty fitting space," she added. "They were pretty stoked when we told them about it."
And don't worry about any soccer balls getting kicked into the Delaware River.
"The battleship actually has a tugboat for this purpose to go fetch balls," Gentile said, "so we'll come well prepared."
The tournament is free to attend, and the winning team gets a special jersey, trophy, and tickets to a Union game.
Tournament officials are also encouraging friends and family of fallen soldiers to play in honor of their loved one. The Union will donate money to Liberty USO and Battleship New Jersey for every team that registers.
"We just want to able to celebrate everybody, bring people together for a day, and hopefully they stick around for some good soccer with us over the weekend," Gentile said.
