South Jersey woman sentenced for killing mother, grandmother

MAYS LANDING, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A judge in Mays Landing has sentenced 43-year-old Heather Barbera to 42 years in prison for beating her mother and grandmother to death at their beach house in Ventnor in July 2018.

In October, Barbera pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter and murder. She used a night stick to attack 67-year-old Michelle Gordon and 87-year-old Elaine Rosen.

Prosecutor Allison Eiselen says Barbera just walked away after bludgenoning her family, leaving them to die, and that there's no more heinous, cruel or depraved crime than killing one's own mother and grandmother.

In court, Barbera apologized and said she never wanted that to happen. Her lawyer says she comes from a toxic family.

Barbera will be eligible for parole in 40 years.
