PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Transit police across the country are marking Rail Safety Week by making sure drivers and walkers stay off the tracks, and a special enforcement effort is planned for Tuesday.

Transit police will be stationing themselves at grade crossings to make sure drivers don't try to go around arms that are down and walkers don't shortcut across the tracks.

SEPTA Transit Police Lt. Jim Zuggi has seen the tragic results.

"It happens more often than it should. I've been on dozens of incidents where, when the arm is down and somebody is trying to get to the train and not necessarily paying attention, trying to run across one train track and not knowing the other train track is also live."

Over the last four years, SEPTA says 33 people have been killed on regional rail tracks.

On Tuesday, SEPTA officers will be at the Fern Rock and Ambler stations, handing out cards with safety tips and handing out warnings or citations when warranted as part of a national Amtrak-organized effort called Operation Clear Track.
