PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Hundreds of Philadelphia school students were recognized for their efforts in science at the 40th annual Carver Science Fair awards ceremony at the Museum of Natural History.

Carver Science Fair participants who presented their projects last week, listened eagerly at the awards ceremony as committee member Nancy Peter read off some of the names in the winning categories.

She says the George Washington Carver Science Fair is one of the oldest and largest urban science fairs in the country.

"And as you see from the awards ceremony, the kind of accolades that these kids are getting for doing science is just astounding," she said.

Meredith Elementary School eighth-grader Max Guillot says he gets inspired by participating.

"Well, when you do a science project, you don't always know everything that you're researching. So while you do the research, and then you do an experiment on it, it helps you learn that specific area of science," he said.

And Peter says that's exactly the point of it all.

"Yes, you want to be critical, yes, you want to give them constructive criticism, but have them leave the fair being really pumped," she said.
