It's been a Philadelphia Mother's Day tradition for 28 years, but this year, thousands gathered at the Philadelphia Museum of Art for a new Susan G. Komen tradition with the same goal.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For the past 29 years, the Ben Franklin Parkway has been flooded with pink on Mother's Day as thousands walked for the fight against breast cancer. But this year, plans changed due to the pandemic.

"This is our 30th year. Let's say I've spent every Mother's Day not in bed with breakfast," said Elaine Grobman, CEO of Susan G. Komen Philadelphia. This would have been the 30th anniversary of the organization's More Than Pink Mothers Day Walk, which raises tens of thousands of dollars every year for breast cancer.

"This year," she said, "we have to find a new way." The new way is moving the walk online.

"We will do a More Than Pink Virtual Walk on June 28, and I promise you it will not be the typical virtual program. It will be engaging and exciting and happening all over our 15 counties," Grobman explained.

Everyone will still walk together, but in their own neighborhoods. With COVID-19, Grobman said many are still relying on the organization for support.

"There are many women in the underserved communities that are unable to get to their treatments," she said. "They don’t have money for groceries, they can’t pay their utility bills, they can’t put gas in their car."

The walk is one of their biggest fundraisers, pulling in tens of thousands of dollars every year. Grobman hopes that people will still register to support the cause.

"Without the support of our More Than Pink Walk, all of our events that are on hold. Funds are in a desperate condition right now," she appealed. "And we need the community to think about Susan G. Komen and the work that we do in saving lives."
