PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It's going to cost a little extra if you’re going to the Jersey shore, as tolls are now up on three major highways.

The increases are for the New Jersey Turnpike, Atlantic City Expressway and the Garden State Parkway.

"What tolls?" was a response from many people who spoke to KYW Newsradio, as they're accustomed to using EZPass.

Missy Kitzmiller, who was on her way to Atlantic City with her son, said long gone are the days when you made sure you had cash on hand.

"I made sure to double check that there was an EZPass on there because you just drive straight through, you don't even notice it," she said.

But Douglas Lindner pointed out just because you don't need to use cash anymore doesn't mean you won't notice it.

"EZPass, it automatically fills itself from your credit card so it doesn't bother you one way or another until you get the bill at the end of the month," he said.

The increases vary from 30 cents to $1.30.

It’s all part of a $24 billion plan approved in May, which includes a permanent cashless toll system and widening sections of the Turnpike and Parkway.

Kitzmiller thinks that sounds like more traffic.

"It's gonna be under construction for the next five years to get that extra lane. We don't need it," she said, though she also admitted, "I don't travel it enough to make that assessment, I guess."

But Lindner, who lives in Pennsylvania, isn't bothered by the toll hike.

"We love the roads so we don't mind paying the extra money on the tolls. You take such good care of the roads compared to Pennsylvania so we're very happy to have that," he said.

That's not the only increase for Jersey drivers. The state's gas tax is going up 9.3 cents a gallon on October 1 to fund different infrastructure projects in the state.
