MARGATE, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A privately owned and run toll bridge down the shore will soon become a little more expensive to cross.

They used to call it the Margate Bridge and Causeway. Now it’s dubbed the Downbeach Express. Whatever you call it, you’ll pay a quarter more to cross it come Monday, June 3 from $1.75 $2 each way.

The rate for Express Pass users (no, they don’t accept EZPass) rises from $1.30 to $1.40.

The Margate Bridge Company owns and operates the three bridge system that takes people from the island to the mainland and, in announcing the change in a press release, said those spans “require continuous and intense upkeep and maintenance.”

“We have spent and continue to spend millions of dollars in capital repair and maintenance costs to keep the bridges and roadway safe and well-conditioned,” said managing partner David Goddard. “The only way to fund this work is through periodic toll adjustments.”

The last time tolls were increased on the Margate Bridge was three years ago.
