PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The year 2019 will mark the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11's historic flight to the moon, and the US Mint will be issuing commemorative coins to honor Apollo's three-man crew.

The Mint will be releasing four curved coins in gold, silver and clad, all featuring two iconic images of the moon landing.

Mint Director David Ryder says the most striking element is their curved shape.

It's an image that has always impressed Aldrin's son, Andy.

"I take a lot of pictures. And my dad's literally taken one picture that I know of in his whole life. And it's one of the most famous, iconic photos in the world and it's just ironic and it's wonderful," Andy said.

Aldrin attended a first strike of the coins at the Philadelphia Mint, along with Neil Armstrong's son, Mark, and Michael Collins' daughter, Ann.

The coins go on sale Jan. 24.

Prices have yet to be announced, but they will include surcharges ranging from $5 to $50. Proceeds will go to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum, the Astronauts Memorial Foundation and the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.
