PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — As the NHL remains on ice during the pandemic, the head coach of the Flyers has been busy phoning some new friends for a worthwhile cause.
Flyers coach Alain Vigneault has been on the phone during the pandemic, but not just with his players. Vigneault has been participating in the Flyers Phone-Linemates program, which involves calls to seniors in Montgomery County who remain isolated.
"If we can help in any miniscule way, we wanted to do it. There's so many people out there, not just the senior citizens, but other people that this is a real challenge," he said.
Vigneault can relate to many of his new phone friends.
The Flyers coach has a strong bond with his parents — ages 84 and 86 — who are also isolated during the pandemic.
"My mom's having a little bit more challenging time there mentally in the past few months, but my dad is still as sharp as he can be," Vigneault said.
The Flyers are hoping to expand the program in the future.
Meanwhile, Vigneault is still hopeful the Flyers and the rest of the NHL will be able to finish their season.
